Do i need to pay extra for internet when buying the blackberry curve?

but i have heard that you need to buy something called a data plan or you have to pay extra for internet or something? please no technical terms im not good with that kind of stuff i just wanted this phone because it was so cute i loved the keyboard and the fact that it was just a really cute nifty and dependable pda/smart phone but i don't want to buy it if i have to pay an extra $30.00 dollars a month just for internet i do not ever use. my carrier is verizon wireless and i wanted to upgrade to the curve so can someone please explain this nonsense to me? thank you it is greatly appreciated(:
