What warning signs do vulcanologist's search for when trying to predict a volcanic eruption?

changes in gas chemistry, periodic low level seismic activity, physical deformation of the surface (bulging), increased heat flux in the near surface, changes in groundwater (hydrothermal) flow in the immediate area, belches and burps (increased explosive activity) from the volcano, stuff like that.
